McCarthy Album 07, Photograph 125 Caption: "Reflections," shows reflections of buildings in reflecting pool at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. See also 96-07-08-alb01-103. -
McCarthy Album 07, Photograph 253 Caption: "Del Monte Hotel Cal July 15, 1915," shows the entrance to the Hotel Del Monte (Lewis P. Hobart and Clarence A. Tan Tau, architects), in Monterey, California. Originally opened in 1880, it was the world's largest luxury resort in that time. During World War II, the hotel and grounds was leased to the U.S. Navy. It later became the Naval Postgraduate School of the U.S. Navy and today functions as administrative offices and residences for the school. -

McCarthy Album 11, Photograph 183 Caption: "The White House. Washington, D.C. July 23, 1934." East Wing of the White House in Washington, D.C. The Neoclassical-style residence and work place of the United States President, designed by James Hoban, was constructed between 1792 and 1800. See also 96-07-08-alb04-085 and 96-07-08-alb09-222. -
McCarthy Album 10, Photograph 078 Caption: "Nudist Colony - San Diego Exposition," c. 1935. The Zoro Garden Nudist Colony, named for the Persian mystic, Zoroaster, was an unusual and controversial attraction that featured partially nude men and women performing as nudists. Exposition visitors were charged twenty-five cents to watch the "nudists" perform ceremonies and other activities. Today, the sunken Zoro Garden in Balboa Park is a butterfly garden. -

View of the New Westminster Bridge (also known as the New Westminster Rail Bridge or the Fraser River Swing Bridge), which opened to traffic in 1904. The lower deck carried trains, while the upper deck (which was removed in 1937) was accessible to both foot and vehicle traffic. -

McCarthy Album 11, Photograph 057 Caption: "City Parkway -- New Orleans. June 16, 34." A row of palm trees interspersed with deciduous trees runs down the middle of this road in New Orleans. -
McCarthy Album 11, Photograph 184 Caption: "Lincoln Memorial, Washington, D.C. July 24, 1934." View of the Lincoln Memorial's façade. The memorial's outer structure, styled after a Greek Doric temple, was designed by architect Henry Bacon, while the statue of Abraham Lincoln within was designed by Daniel Chester French. The memorial was dedicated in 1922. -
McCarthy Album 11, Photograph 306 Caption: "State Capitol, Sacramento, Calif. Oct. 8, 1934." Construction began on the neoclassical California State Capitol Building, the dome of which is seen here (the rest of the building is largely obscured by trees), in 1860. Completed in 1874, the building still houses the state's legislature and the offices of the Governor. -

McCarthy Album 08, Photograph 015 Caption: "Stanley Park Vancouver B.C.," c. 1908-1912. Shows a pond with central fountain, surrounded by lush vegetation including evergreen trees. A group of people stands at the pond's edge in the distance. The City of Vancouver opened Stanley Park in 1888. The 405-hectare park is even now thickly forested, and remains Vancouver's largest park. It is located on the northern edge of the city, surrounded on three sides by Vancouver Harbor and English Bay. -
McCarthy Album 08, Photograph 139 Caption: "Fort Stevens, Or.," c. 1910. View of buildings at Fort Stevens, part of the Three Fort Harbor Defense System protecting the mouth of the Columbia River from enemy incursion or attack (the other forts being Fort Columbia and Fort Canby, both in Washington). Built during the Civil War, the fort remained active until after World War II. In June 1942, Fort Stevens gained the dubious distinction of being the only military installation in the continental United States to come under enemy fire when a Japanese submarine surfaced off the coast and fired seventeen missiles at the fort. The missiles destroyed the backstop to the fort's baseball field, but otherwise did little harm. Fort Stevens was decommissioned in 1947. It was later turned over to the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, and currently is the site of an Oregon State Park. -
