William McCarthy described this as the home of Helen Marguerite Clark, a silent film actress who married Louisiana businessman Harry Palmerston Williams. California State Archives staff were not able to confirm that this house was one of the New Orleans-area residences owned by the couple. -

Skaggs Springs was a resort area along the Russian River, known for its hot springs. The area now lies beneath the waters of Lake Sonoma, flooded after construction of the Warm Springs Dam, completed in 1982. -

McCarthy Album 05, Photograph 186 Caption: "Tacoma Bridge.," c. 1913. Double leaf, Rall-type bascule bridge spanning the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon. This is one of the rare instances where William McCarthy's labeling of the photographs in the albums is incorrect. The Broadway Bridge, built in 1913, was Portland's first bascule bridge, or drawbridge. It retains the distinction of being the longest bascule bridge span in the world. -
McCarthy Album 03, Photograph 019 No Caption: William and Grace McCarthy (standing and looking at the camera) at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, 1915. The Panama Pacific International Exposition was held to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal, as well as inventive technologies and new industries from around the world. It was also a chance for San Francisco to show the world how the great city had rebuilt and thrived after the devastation of the 1906 earthquake and fire. -
McCarthy Album 05, Photograph 060 Caption: "French 75 Millimeter Gun Model of 1897." c. 1912-1915. William McCarthy posing with a French 75mm field gun, with an unidentified man. Commonly called the French 75, or simply the 75, this heavy, rapid-fire artillery gun was developed in 1897. During World War I it was adapted to fire shells full of toxic gas, and was also modified for mounting on an armored vehicle. See also 96-07-08-alb05-061. -

McCarthy Album 05, Photograph 200 Caption: "Benicia Arsenal Entrance," c. 1915. View of the gateway to Benicia Arsenal, where William McCarthy worked (starting in 1903). Established in 1851, the Benicia Arsenal was the primary ordnance facility of the U.S. Army on the West Coast. The facility was deactivated in 1963, and closed completely the following year. The area now serves a vastly different function, providing work and retail space for artists and artisans. -

Camp Kearney was established by the U.S. Army in 1917 just north of San Diego. The post was largely abandoned by the government in 1920, used as a military and civilian airfield. It did not see increased military service again until the 1930s. -

William McCarthy sitting in the operator's position of a Gatling gun, an early rapid-fire, crank-turned weapon first used during combat in the Civil War. Developed in 1861 by Dr. Richard J. Gatling, the weapon was commonly used during the late nineteenth century before being superseded by newer, more modern guns. -

Image is a map of the United States showing "Our 1934 United States Automobile Tour. Traveled 10,000 miles -- May 14 to Oct 9.th. Note the Blue Line for Route of Travel." The blue line stretches from San Francisco to Los Angeles, then along the southern portion of the U.S. into Florida, south to Havana, and then north along the East Coast until heading east from Boston. The route skirted the Great Lakes then struck out across the Great Plains, Colorado, and Nevada, before ending in San Francisco to complete the loop.
