McCarthy Album 05, Photograph 166 Caption: "Tea Garden -- Golden Gate Park," c. 1910. View of the five-acre Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Established in 1894 by George Turner Marsh for the Midwinter Exposition of that year, it is the oldest public Japanese Tea Garden in the U.S. -

Purchased in 1913 by the Martinez and Benicia Ferry and Transportation Company, the City of Seattle served as a ferry between Benicia and Martinez until being requisitioned by the U.S. Navy in 1944. -

This stamp features portraits of Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain, early explorers of Canada. Cartier was the first to claim Canada for the French crown in 1534, while Champlain founded New Canada and Quebec City in 1608. -
McCarthy Album 08, Photograph 126 No Caption: View of the Manufacturing Building at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. Held in Seattle to celebrate the development of the Pacific Northwest, the fair attracted 3.7 million visitors over the course of its run from June to October 1909. Although most of the fair's buildings have since been destroyed, several of them now serve as part of the University of Washington campus. -

This image shows several elephants walking down a street in Santa Rosa, part of the Ringling Brothers Circus, which first came to Santa Rosa in 1903. The traveling circus became an annual event in the town for the next two decades. -

McCarthy Album 05, Photograph 297 Caption: "Forbidden Garden -- Santa Barbara Mission," c. 1910. View of the gardens associated with Santa Barbara Mission. The gardens initially served as the location for instructing neophytes (Native American converts living at the mission) in trades and skills deemed necessary to life in European civilization. Later, the garden was used for meditation. The garden was often dubbed "forbidden" because it was closed to female visitors, as were many enclosures in active missions. -

The cantilevered steel through truss bridge, designed by Ralph Modjeski, spans the Mississippi River between Elmwood and Bridge City. It opened to traffic in 1935. -
McCarthy Album 11, Photograph 295 Caption: "Church Butte [sic], near Green River, Wyoming. Oct. 2, 1934." The Church Buttes in Wyoming consist of sandstone eroded by wind and weather into a butte approximately 1,000 feet in diameter and rising up to 100 feet above the surrounding valley floor. Located along the Overland Route used by emigrants to the West Coast, the formation gained additional notoriety for being a camp site for Brigham Young and the first Mormon party to head west, as well as a relay site for the Pony Express. -
