McCarthy Album 10, Photograph 397 Caption: "Palace of Fine Arts or National Theater [sic] - built of white marble. Work started in 1900, complete in 1935, cost 35,000,000 pesos." The Palacio de Bellas Artes, is considered the cultural center of Mexico City. It houses the Museum of Architecture, and the National Theater, a performance space for music, dance, and theatre. Murals by renown Mexican artists such as Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, Jose Clemente Orozco, and others are exhibited on the top floor and other galleries throughout the building. -

McCarthy Album 09, Photograph 137 Caption: "N.Y. State Capitol - Albany." New York State's Capitol Building was constructed between 1867 and 1899. The initial architect, Thomas Fuller, designed the first floor in a Classical or Romanesque style. He was replaced by Leopold Eidlitz and Henry Hobson Richardson, who designed the next two floors in a Renaissance style. The final architect to preside over the project, Isaac G. Perry, completed the building in a Victorian-Romanesque style. See also 96-07-08-alb11-247. -

Several horseback riders holding long poles skirmish around a bucket in what appears to be a game similar to polo, played with a potato. A crowd has gathered to watch the game, while the rock cliff walls of Yosemite Valley tower in the background. Given the date, this was likely part of Independence Day festivities in the Yosemite Valley. -

McCarthy Album 05, Photograph 121 Caption: "Brothers Light House" and "Scenes on the Sacramento River.," c. 1920. Shows the island and structures associated with the East Brother Island Lighthouse, lit in 1874 in San Rafael Bay near Richmond, California. The light was automated in 1969. After restoration in the early 1980s, the lighthouse now operates as a bed-and-breakfast. -

After the earthquake and fire that destroyed much of San Francisco in April 1906, hundreds of thousands of people were left homeless. Many of these people established temporary refugee camps, using debris from the destruction to cobble together shelters. -
McCarthy Album 03, Photograph 081 Caption: "Stockton Asylum." Stockton, California, c. 1906. The Stockton Insane Asylum was established in 1851, completed in 1853, and was the first public mental health hospital in California. It remained a functioning state hospital until 1995. -
McCarthy Album 08, Photograph 084 Caption: "Pleasant Beach, Wash.," c. 1908-1912. View from across a bay in Puget Sound, looking toward the Pleasant Beach Hotel. Built before the turn of the twentieth century, this resort hotel featured forty rooms, a bowling alley, billiards room, swimming pool, and a pavilion. The resort came to be known as the "Coney Island" of Puget Sound. -
McCarthy Album 08, Photograph 207 Caption: "115 Co., Fort Rosecrans.," c. 1905. View of the 115th Company of the U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps, standing in formation. The 115th was formed at the San Diego Barracks in 1901 and subsequently moved to Fort Rosecrans on Point Loma near San Diego. They remained at the fort until 1924 when the company was moved to Puget Sound in Washington. -

McCarthy Album 05, Photograph 250 Caption: "Tabernacle -- Salt Lake City," c. 1916. View of the domed Salt Lake Tabernacle, built from 1864-1867. The Tabernacle housed meetings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints until new facilities were constructed in 2000. The Tabernacle is home to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and is considered to be one of the most acoustically perfect buildings in the world due to its unique dome-shaped roof. -

McCarthy Album 08, Photograph 085 Caption: "Dry dock, Bremerton.," c. 1908-1912. View of a dry dock at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington. Established in 1891 as a naval station, it became Naval Yard Puget Sound in 1901. During World War I the shipyard constructed hundreds of ships to support the war effort, while in World War II, the shipyard was dedicated primarily to repairing damaged ships. Today, it contains a portion of the U.S. Navy's mothball fleet (ships retired but retained in case of future need), as well as building, repairing, and maintaining sea-going vessels of all kinds. -

McCarthy Album 05, Photograph 251 Caption: "Saltair. Salt Lake." View of the first Saltair resort pavilion, constructed in 1893. Designed by Richard K.A. Kletting, the pavilion hovered above the Great Salt Lake on more than 2,000 posts and pilings. The resort was a popular spot for Mormon families, only fifteen miles from Salt Lake City and overseen by Church leaders. The Church sold the pavilion in 1906. It was later destroyed by fire in 1925. -

The Arsenal was founded in 1813 in Watervliet, New York, to support the War of 1812. Today the Arsenal houses the U.S. Army's Benét Laboratories, part of the Army's Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center. -

José Miguel Gómez y Gómez was instrumental in the Cuban War of Independence (1895-1898), and also served as Cuba's President from 1909-1913. Although he died in New York, his remains were interred in the Colon Cemetery in Havana. -

Established in 1900 for travelers who could not afford to stay in the resort hotel, the Coronado Tent City consisted of a grid of streets lined with furnished tents, near the sea shore. It also featured restaurants, a library, soda fountain, theater, bandstand, and other recreational facilities. -
