McCarthy Album 03, Photograph 064 Caption: "Totem Pole, Seattle." Seattle, Washington, c. 1905. View of the Tlingit totem pole in Seattle's Pioneer Square. The totem pole was stolen in 1899 by a group of businessmen, and erected in the square, then known as Pioneer Place. An arsonist destroyed this pole in 1938, but it was later replaced by another carved by the Tlingit tribe (who were also finally paid for the original pole). -

McCarthy Album 10, Photograph 005 Caption: "Pasa [sic] Robles Hotel, May 22, 1935." View of the Hotel el Paso de Robles (pass of the oaks). This resort hotel opened in 1891, and featured a variety of amenities including a mineral hot springs "plunge" bath. The hotel burned down in 1940, and was replaced by the building that is still in operation today as the Paso Robles Inn. -

Located in the Crater Lake National Park, Crater Lake is a caldera lake formed about 7,700 years ago by the collapse of the volcano, Mount Mazama. Its 1,949 foot depth makes it the deepest lake in the United States. -

Unidentified people enjoying the surf and beach at Ocean Beach, overlooked by the iconic San Francisco Cliff House. The Victorian structure shown here is the third iteration of the Cliff House, constructed in 1896. It was later destroyed by a fire, in 1907. -

McCarthy Album 08, Photograph 069 Caption: "Port Townsend Bicycle Path.," c. 1910. Image of a rural path or road, surrounded by trees and vegetation, with a hill in the distance. The bicycle made its first appearance in the Puget Sound area in the late 1870s. Within twenty years, thousands of enthusiasts had adapted the new mode of transportation. Such enthusiasts often formed clubs, such as the Queen City Good Roads Club, based in Seattle (south of Port Townsend). These clubs advocated, constructed, and helped to maintain pathways dedicated specifically to bicycle traffic. Ironically, the efforts made by the bicyclists to generally improve roadways contributed to the rise of another new mode of transportation -- the automobile. -
McCarthy Album 08, Photograph 192 No Caption: c. 1910. Ocean shore scene with waves and high spray. The Vue de L'eau (View of the Water) was a station on the Santa Cruz, Garfield Park and Capitola Electric Railway electric streetcar line. Built in 1891, the station was located at the very end of the line, on a promontory overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It featured an observatory on the top story. The same company also built a casino, ballroom, and restaurant nearby. The station burned down in 1925. See also 96-07-08-alb05-074. -

Station building for the Oregon-Washington Railroad and Navigation Company, formed in 1910 from the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company as a subsidiary of the Union Pacific Railroad. Designed by architect Daniel J. Patterson, the Beaux Arts-style station opened in 1911. -

McCarthy Album 02, Photograph 023 No Caption: Interior shot of the Sutro Baths, north of the Cliff House, c. 1910. Designed by Adolph Sutro in 1894, the bathhouses at one time covered three oceanfront acres just north of Ocean Beach and the Cliff House. Eventually, the Sutro Baths fell into disrepair and what was left of them burned down in 1966. Since 1973, the concrete ruins have been part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
