McCarthy Album 11, Photograph 219 Caption: "Coney Island. Sunday Crowd. New York. Aug. 19, 1934." Very crowded beach scene on New York's Coney Island. The construction of several resort hotels on the island in the 1870s and 1880s encouraged construction of amusement parks to provide tourist destinations. Coney Island has hosted several large amusement parks over the years, including one of the world's first roller coasters (built in 1884). Numerous smaller attractions were available as well. The island's popularity peaked in the mid-twentieth century, in the World War II era, but despite some decline is still a world-renowned recreation area. -

McCarthy Album 05, Photograph 089 Caption: "Camp Herman," c. 1912-1915. View of the Zayante Inn at Mount Herman. Originally the site of Hotel Tuxedo, in 1906 a group later known as the Mount Herman Association, Inc. purchased the building and surrounding property, and renamed it the Zayante Inn. The inn became a Christian retreat center. Although this building was destroyed by fire in 1921, the retreat center was rebuilt as the Mount Herman Christian Conference Center, still operating today. -

Retracting or disappearing guns were a form of artillery developed in the nineteenth century in which heavy artillery guns were placed on rotating carriages that allowed retraction of the weapon after firing, to enable reloading while under enemy fire. -

McCarthy Album 03, Photograph 050 Caption: "Fort Stevens, Oregon," c. 1905. Panorama of Fort Stevens, built in the 1860s as part of the defensive fortifications guarding the mouth of the Columbia River. Located on the Oregon side of the river, the fort was decommissioned after World War II, its armaments and buildings removed and auctioned off. The site now serves as a state park complete with military museum. -

The coastal artillery fortification Fort Flagler was established in 1897 and activated in 1899. Most of the fort's buildings and batteries had been completed by 1907. Fort Flagler was part of the "triangle of fire," three coastal defense fortifications (Fort Casey, Fort Worden, and Fort Flagler) guarding the entrance to Puget Sound. Fort Flagler was decommissioned in 1953, and purchased by the State of Washington in 1955 for use as a state park. -

The Victorian structure shown here is the third iteration of the Cliff House, constructed in 1896. It was later destroyed by a fire, in 1907. -

McCarthy Album 06, Photograph 034 Caption: "U.S. Mint unhurt," c. 1906. Pictured is the U.S. Mint building in San Francisco, which opened in 1874, after the original 1854 building was outgrown, which had been established to serve the gold mines during the California Gold Rush. The building suffered little damage after the 1906 earthquake. The facility served as the San Francisco U.S. Mint until 1937, when workers moved to a larger and more modern building. In 1961, the old U.S. Mint, known as the "Granite Lady," was designated a National Historic Landmark. -
