McCarthy Album 06, Photograph 280 Caption: "Cliff House Burning," 1907. People standing on Ocean Beach watching the third Cliff House burning in San Francisco, in 1907. The original Cliff House was built in 1858. The second was built in 1863 and was destroyed by fire on Christmas day in 1894. The third Victorian- style Cliff House was completed in 1896, and although it survived the 1906 earthquake and fires, it burned to the ground in 1907, as seen in this image. A fourth Cliff House was then built with steel-reinforced concrete and opened in 1909. -
McCarthy Album 09, Photograph 102 Caption: "Jackson Park - Chicago," c. 1923. The Grand Basin at Jackson Park. This 500-acre park was originally designed for use as the site of the World's Columbian Exposition (also called the Chicago World's Fair), held in 1893. The Grand Basin was a large reflecting pool at the center of the Exposition, around which the main buildings were constructed. -
McCarthy Album 09, Photograph 230 Caption: "Unknown Soldiers Grave - Arlington Cemetry[sic]," c. 1925. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, also called the Tomb of the Unknowns, memorializes those U.S. military service members who died without their remains being later identified. The remains of the first Unknown Soldier, stemming from World War I and disinterred from a cemetery in France, were laid to rest in the tomb in 1921. -

McCarthy Album 11, Photograph 092 Caption: "Seminole Indian Women Washing Clothes -- Everglades -- Fla. June 30, 1934." Two unidentified women and a small child washing clothing. Several articles of clothing are spread out to dry on a canoe lifted off the ground by sawhorses made of logs. They are likely Seminoles, a Native American tribe in Florida, although most of the tribe had been forcibly relocated from Florida to Oklahoma by 1842. Fewer than 200 remained in Florida after the Third Seminole War ended in 1858, but a resurgence of the tribe occurred in the early to mid twentieth century. The Florida Seminole tribe received federal recognition in 1957. -
McCarthy Album 10, Photograph 113 Caption: "Mormon Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah," c. 1935. The Salt Lake City Mormon Temple was opened in 1893 and is the largest temple (253,015 square feet) built by the Church of the Latter-day Saints. -

McCarthy Album 05, Photograph 215 Caption: "Smith Bldg. Seattle, Wash.," c. 1915. View of the neoclassical Smith Tower in Seattle, built by industrialist Lyman Cornelius Smith. At the time of its completion in 1914, the Smith Tower was the tallest building on the West Coast, until being superseded by the Space Needle in 1962. -
McCarthy Album 06, Photograph 155 Caption: "Santa Fe Depot, Los Angeles," c. 1910. The La Grande Station opened in 1893 and served as the main passenger terminal for the Atchinson, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (Santa Fe). The building, with its Moorish inspired architecture, was heavily damaged by the 1933 Long Beach earthquake and was eventually demolished in 1946. -

McCarthy Album 09, Photograph 103 Caption: "Office Bldg. Swift & Co - Chicago," c. 1923. The general office of Chicago's Swift and Co., founded by meat packing magnate Gustavus Franklin Smith, Sr. in the late nineteenth century. -
McCarthy Album 09, Photograph 231 Caption: "St. Louis Cathedral Built in 1794 by Don Andreas Almonastry Roxas - Jacksen[sic] Park - New Orleans." St. Louis Cathedral anchors one end of Jackson Square in New Orleans' French Quarter. The structure of the cathedral largely dates to the 1850 restoration and expansion of an older cathedral built on the site in 1793. Very little of the older church survived, although the central bell tower (added on to the older church in 1819) was reused in the new structure and is still extant today. A statue of Andrew Jackson mounted on a rearing horse (Clark Mills, sculptor) stands in the square in front of the cathedral. The sculpture was erected in 1856. See also 96-07-08-alb11-052. -

McCarthy Album 08, Photograph 173 Caption: "SPORTS," c. 1917. Image of a pole vaulter attempting to clear a jump, with rows of men clad in military uniforms observing. The uniforms and the surrounding vegetation suggest that this may have taken place at Camp Lewis, Washington. -
McCarthy Album 05, Photograph 216 Caption: "Totem Pole -- Seattle, Wash.," c. 1915. View of the Tlingit totem pole in Seattle's Pioneer Square. The totem pole was stolen in 1899 by a group of businessmen, and erected in the square, then known as Pioneer Place. An arson destroyed this pole in 1938, but it was later replaced by another carved by the Tlingit tribe (who were also finally paid for the original pole). -

McCarthy Album 06, Photograph 156 Caption: "Santa Fe Depot, San Diego," c. 1908. Built in 1887 for the California Southern Railroad Company, the small depot station was later demolished to make way for a much larger station, which opened in 1915. -

McCarthy Album 11, Photograph 218 Caption: "Montauk Lighthouse, Most Northern Point on Long Island, N.Y., Aug. 18, 1934." The Montauk Lighthouse, first lit in 1797, was the first lighthouse built in New York. Ezra L'Hommedieu designed the building as well as choosing its site on the eastern edge of Long Island. A renovation in 1860 raised the lighthouse to its current height of more than 110 feet. A larger lantern was installed at that time as well. Electrified in 1940, it is now a National Historic Landmark as well as an active lighthouse. -
