McCarthy Album 09, Photograph 300 Caption: "Nevada Falls [sic] - Yosemite," c. 1917. Nevada Fall is a 594-foot high waterfall upstream of Vernal Fall on the Merced River, in the Little Yosemite Valley. This photograph, taken at a point next to the fall's path of descent, shows the upper portion of the fall. -

McCarthy Album 09, Photograph 047 Caption: " Grand Canyon - Yellowstone," c. 1923. Bird's eye view of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The 308-foot tall cascade of Lower Yellowstone Falls can be seen at the top of the photograph, flowing into the Canyon. The Canyon is approximately 24 miles long, and between 800 and 1,200 feet deep. -
McCarthy Album 04, Photograph 103 Caption: "Grounds Where Photo Play Intolerance was Staged.," c. 1916. Large columns and building facades built for the Babylon scenes of the 1916 silent film Intolerance (directed by D.W. Griffith). The set was torn down in 1919. -
McCarthy Album 09, Photograph 048 Caption: "Yellowstone Grand Canyon," c. 1923. One wall of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone can be seen in this photograph, viewed from the opposite rim of the Canyon. The Canyon is approximately 24 miles long, and between 800 and 1,200 feet deep. -
McCarthy Album 09, Photograph 303 Caption: "Lilouette [sic] Falls," c. 1917. Illilouette Falls is a 370-foot waterfall in Yosemite located on the Illilouette Creek, a small tributary of the Merced River. The photograph was taken from a point above the summit of the falls. -
McCarthy Album 11, Photograph 287 Caption: "A Chrysler Car Maneuver Chicago Fair. Sept. 23, 1934." A car appears to be rolling over in this photograph of the Chrysler Track at Chicago's Century of Progress Exposition. The Exposition, a world fair attended by thirty-nine million people, celebrated Chicago's one-hundred year anniversary of incorporation. Originally planned to only run from May to November in 1933, it was such a success that its organizers decided to keep it running for a second season from May through October the following year. The central theme of the Exposition was technological innovation, with a motto of "Science Finds, Industry Applies, Man Conforms." -

McCarthy Album 09, Photograph 304 Caption: "Cascade Falls," c. 1917. Erroneously labeled as Cascade Falls, this photograph actually shows both the Upper and Lower Yosemite Falls as viewed from the floor of Yosemite Valley. The highest waterfall in Yosemite National Park, Yosemite Falls is made up of two successive cascades falling a total of 2,425 feet from the top of the Upper Fall to the base of the Lower Fall. The Upper Fall alone is 1,430 feet high, and is one of the top twenty highest waterfalls in the world. -
McCarthy Album 11, Photograph 288 Caption: "Mississippi River Bridge. Rock Island to Davenport, Iowa. Sept. 25, 1934." View of the Government Bridge spanning the Mississippi River between Rock Island and Davenport, Iowa. Built in 1896 and designed by Ralph Modjeski, the bridge in this photograph was the fourth bridge constructed at the site, replacing earlier structures made obsolete by the increasing volume and changing character of traffic. This double-decker bridge connected the U.S. arsenal on Rock Island with Davenport, Iowa, and featured a double rail road track, a separate deck for automobiles, and a swing section. The bridge is still in use today. -

McCarthy Album 04, Photograph 108 Caption: "Del Mar," c. 1915-1916. View from road adjacent to the hotel. The Stratford Inn (which opened in 1909) became the Hotel Del Mar in 1926. It was torn down in 1969, and subsequently rebuilt in the 1980s. -
McCarthy Album 04, Photograph 236 Caption: "Lumber Flume -- on the Yosemite Merced Road," c. 1920. Flume with boards being carried by running water, likely along what is now known as California State Route 140, connecting the town of Merced with the Yosemite Valley. -
McCarthy Album 05, Photograph 036 Caption: "Wreck on the Vallejo Napa Line." Photograph showing some of the train cars involved in a June 19, 1913 accident in which two trains of the San Francisco, Napa Valley and Calistoga Railroad collided head-on approximately 2.4 miles north of Vallejo. Ten passengers and three railroad employees were killed, and twenty-eight others injured. -
McCarthy Album 08, Photograph 124 No Caption: View of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition at dusk, with pathways defined by globe lights. The Government Building can be seen in the center of the photograph. Held in Seattle to celebrate the development of the Pacific Northwest, the fair attracted 3.7 million visitors over the course of its run from June to October 1909. Although most of the fair's buildings have since been destroyed, several of them now serve as part of the University of Washington campus. -

McCarthy Album 09, Photograph 054 Caption: "Devil's Kitchen," c. 1923. This photograph shows several people descending into and standing around the entry to Devil's Kitchen, an extinct hot spring that left behind a cavern. Once a popular tourist attraction for its small opening that made visitors feel as if they were descending into the underworld, the site was closed in 1939 because the cavern periodically fills with dangerous levels of carbon dioxide. -

McCarthy Album 04, Photograph 111 *Caption: "California Building -- San Diego Exposition," c. 1915-1916. Automobile parked along road to the Panama-California Exposition entrance, with California Building's tower and dome in the background. The Panama-California Exposition was held in San Diego in 1915 and 1916 to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal. It was smaller in scale and less well-funded than the Panama-Pacific International Exposition held in 1915 in San Francisco. See also 96-07-08-alb05-071. -

McCarthy Album 05, Photograph 168 Caption, c. 1905. Sixteen camels pull the Ringling Brothers Egyptian Circus Wagon down a street in Santa Rosa in this photograph. The Ringling Brothers Circus first came to Santa Rosa in 1903. The traveling circus became an annual event in the town for the next two decades. -
McCarthy Album 09, Photograph 311 Caption: "Scene On The Tioga Road," c. 1917. In a photograph taken from the Tioga Road, a massive granite dome rises above the trees in Yosemite National Park. -
McCarthy Album 11, Photograph 174 Caption: "State Capitol, Richmond, Virginia. July 21, 1934." Virginia's State Capitol is visible in the left side of this photograph, while the Virginia Washington Monument can be seen at the right. The Capitol, designed largely by Thomas Jefferson and French architect Charles-Louis Clérisseau, was sufficiently complete by October 1792 for the Virginia General Assembly to meet within its walls. The building served as the capitol of the Confederacy during the Civil War. The Virginia Washington Monument, completed in 1869, features a 21-foot-tall statue of George Washington, mounted on a horse. -
McCarthy Album 04, Photograph 113 Caption: "Ramona's Marriage Place -- San Diego," c. 1915-1916. Automobile parked along adobe building with sign proclaiming "Ramona's Marriage Place," referring to the fictional character Ramona from Helen Hunt Jackson's novel of the same name. The building, known as Casa de Estudillo, was built in 1827 by José María Estudillo. -
