McCarthy Album 09, Photograph 075 Caption: "Gateway to Garden of the Gods - Pikes Peak in the Distance," c. 1923. Two massive rock formations rise on either side of this photograph, bracketing Pikes Peak in the distance. The Garden of the Gods, a region of spectacular red rock formations in Colorado, was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1971. -
McCarthy Album 09, Photograph 203 Caption: "N.Y. Sky Scrapers," c. 1925. Bird's eye view of a part of New York City, with the Woolworth building dominating the left side of the photograph. Constructed between 1910 and 1920 and designed by architect Cass Gilbert, the Neo-Gothic building was once the tallest in the world at 792 feet. -

McCarthy Album 05, Photograph 317 Caption: "Decorated Locomotive. Fifth Liberty Bond Drive -- Benicia, Calif." During World War I, the U.S. government raised funds for the war by issuing "liberty bonds." Citizens who purchased the bonds could later redeem them for the purchase price plus interest. Liberty Bond Drives were held to encourage people to purchase the bonds. This photograph shows a locomotive employed in the fifth Liberty Bond Drive, held in 1919. Decorated with bunting and flags to inspire patriotic feeling, Liberty Bond Trains crisscrossed the U.S. to round up funding. -
McCarthy Album 08, Photograph 023 Caption: "Clife [sic] House S.F.," c. 1908-1912. View of San Francisco's Cliff House overlooking Ocean Beach. The building shown here is the fourth iteration of the Cliff House, a neo-classical design built after a fire destroyed the Victorian structure previously at the site in 1907. Reconstruction of the iconic restaurant began in 1908, and a new Cliff House opened in 1909 (the building in this photograph). This neo-classical building was extensively remodeled in the 1930s. -

McCarthy Album 04, Photograph 261 No caption, c. 1920. Scene showing the La Plaza Building in Atascadero. Opened in 1917 and designed by John J. Roth, the building contained shops, a post office, and a movie theater on the lower floors, while the rooms of the Atascadero Inn occupied the top floor. The building was converted entirely to the Atascadero Inn in the 1920s, but was subsequently destroyed by fire in 1934. -
McCarthy Album 08, Photograph 149 No Caption: c. 1910. View of the Point Adams Lifesaving Station near Hammond, Oregon, including a rowboat ("Point Adams") manned by eight rowers, with one man at the rudder. The Point Adams Lifesaving Station was established in 1889 by the federal government, in response to growing numbers of merchant, fishing, and other sailing vessels along the Columbia River. The stationhouse, visible in the center of the photograph, was demolished in 1939 to make way for a new building. The two-bay boathouse visible at the right had to be moved in 1913-1915 due to erosion of the bank upon which it stood. The U.S. Coastguard took over operation of the station in 1915. The station remained operational until 1967. The remaining buildings now house the Point Adams Research Facility of the Northwest Fisheries Science Center. -

McCarthy Album 04, Photograph 262 No caption, c. 1920. View of the Hotel el Paso de Robles. This resort hotel opened in 1891, featuring a variety of amenities including a mineral hot springs "plunge" bath. The hotel burned down in 1940, and was replaced by the building that is still in operation today as the Paso Robles Inn. -

McCarthy Album 11, Photograph 069 Caption: "Mrs Eliza Smart and Family -- Chattahoochee, Florida, June 22, 34." Eliza Smart (standing in the back) and nine unidentified children, posing under a tree for the photograph. This is one of the few photographs in which the McCarthys identified the people who they met along their travels. -

McCarthy Album 08, Photograph 151 No Caption: c. 1898. View of Tillamook Rock Lighthouse and the small basalt rock upon which it sits, over one mile into the ocean from Tillamook Head. Built between 1880-1881, the treacherous ocean currents and often inclement weather associated with the area earned the lighthouse its nickname "Terrible Tillie" or "Tillie." This photograph was taken before the roof of the lighthouse was raised by five feet in 1898, to help prevent damage to the roof and the interior by crashing waves. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1957. -

McCarthy Album 04, Photograph 136 Caption: "Hobergs Resort -- Lake Co.," c. 1920. Resort buildings nestled in grove of trees. Built in 1885, the resort stood until 2015, when it was destroyed by the Valley Fire. -
McCarthy Album 04, Photograph 264 No caption, c. 1935. Lucy Parker Telles, a Mono Lake Paiute, lived in the Yosemite Valley. She was part of a group of Native American women who became well-known for their intricate basket weaving. -
McCarthy Album 11, Photograph 071 Caption: "State Capitol Tallahassee, Florida, June 23, 1934." View of the Florida State Capitol building, constructed in 1845. The dome, visible in the center of the photograph, was added in 1902. The building was altered and expanded several more times over the years, until a new State Capitol was built in the late 1970s. The old Capitol building was subsequently restored to its 1902 appearance and reopened to the public in 1982. -

McCarthy Album 09, Photograph 211 Caption: "Obelisk - Central Park," c. 1925. The obelisk in this photograph was erected in Central Park on February 22nd, 1881. It is an authentic Ancient Egyptian artifact, having been created during the rule of Thusmose III in the 18th Dynasty (despite the nickname, the obelisk has no known connection to Cleopatra). It was acquired in 1877 as a gift from the Egyptian Khedive. -

McCarthy Album 11, Photograph 323 Caption: "Golden Gate Bridge, Opening Day, May 28, 1937." Dozens of automobiles are visible crossing the Golden Gate Bridge in this photograph, taken on the bridge's Opening Day, the first day that vehicular traffic was allowed over the bridge. Completed in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge spans the mouth of San Francisco Bay (called the Golden Gate), connecting San Francisco with Marin County to the north. It is one of the most recognizable bridges in the world, and was named in 1994 as one of the Modern Wonders of the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. -

McCarthy Album 11, Photograph 077 Caption: "In Memory of Florida Confederates, Memorial Monument -- Pensacola Florida, June 21, 34." Photograph of the pillar and statue erected in Pensacola's Lee Square in 1891, memorializing "the Uncrowned Heroes of the Southern Confederacy" and Confederate leaders such as Jefferson Davis. Two low pyramids made up of cannon balls bracket the monument. As of the time of this writing (November 2017), controversy swirls around efforts to remove the memorial. -

This photograph shows the Manhattan skyline, as well as the Battery, a 25-acre park at the tip of Manhattan Island. The park was named for the artillery batteries that used to protect the city and its harbor from this location. -
