McCarthy Album 09, Photograph 107 Caption: "City Hall - Detroit," c. 1925. Grace McCarthy poses in front of Detroit's City Hall. The Italian Renaissance Revival-style building, designed by architect James Anderson, was constructed between 1867 and 1871. It housed Detroit's city government until 1955, when a new facility was ready for occupation. This building was subsequently demolished in 1961. -

McCarthy Album 11, Photograph 105 Caption: "Hialeah Race Track -- Miami -- Florida July 1, 1934." Grace McCarthy standing behind the grandstand at Hialeah Park Race Track, in Hialeah (near Miami). Constructed in 1922 as a greyhound racetrack, Hialeah began hosting horse races in 1925. Joseph E. Widener purchased the track in 1930. He embarked upon a series of improvements, adding a grandstand (seen here) and clubhouse facilities designed by Lester W. Geisler, as well as landscaped gardens and a lake in the infield that became home to a flock of flamingos. The new and improved Hialeah track, now called Hialeah Park, officially opened in 1932. -

Grace McCarthy seated on an unusual bench made from a tree branch and logs, in front of a timber shelter at Pacific Congress Springs near Saratoga in California's Santa Clara Valley. Pacific Congress Springs, a mineral spring named after Congress Springs in New York, operated as a resort area from the nineteenth century until the 1930s. -

The gazebo, the park's oldest standing structure (built in about 1890), features a fountain that used to supply water from the mineral springs in the area. Today, the fountain's water comes from the City of San Jose's municipal supply. -

McCarthy Album 09, Photograph 015 Caption: "Salt Air - Great Salt Lake," c.1923. Grace McCarthy poses in front of the Saltair resort complex on Utah's Great Salt Lake. Constructed in 1893 and designed by Richard K.A. Kletting, the Saltair set out to be the Western counterpart of Coney Island. The resort was a popular spot for Mormon families, only fifteen miles from Salt Lake City and overseen by Church leaders. The Church sold the building in 1906. It was later destroyed by fire in 1925, but a second pavilion was quickly built. -

McCarthy Album 09, Photograph 278 Caption: "El Portal," c. 1917. Grace McCarthy poses with two unidentified people in front of the Hotel del Portal (or Del Portal Hotel) in El Portal, California. The resort hotel was constructed in 1908 by the Yosemite Terminal Company, a subsidiary of the Yosemite Valley Railroad Company, to provide accommodations for visitors to the park who arrived by train. The hotel burned to the ground in late October of 1917. -

The pool, sometimes called Emerald Spring, is located in the park's Black Sand Basin. Yellow sulphur deposits, combined with the blue of the water, give the pool a vivid green color. -

McCarthy Album 07, Photograph 213 Caption: "Green Hotel Pasadena," c. 1915, shows Grace McCarthy standing before the Hotel Green in Pasadena, built by George Gill Green in 1893, and expanded by him in 1898 and 1903 with two additional structures. The hotel complex was sold to private investors and by 1924, the 1898 Central Annex structure (Frederick L. Roehrig, architect) was turned into apartments and renamed the Castle Green. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the California Register of Historic Places, and the City of Pasadena's list of historic places. See also 96-07-08-alb07-212. -

The Mariposa Grove, near Wawona, is the largest grove of Giant Sequoia trees in Yellowstone National Park. It also includes two of the thirty largest Giant Sequoias in the world. -

Grace McCarthy poses with two unidentified people next to the Fallen Monarch, the enormous trunk of a fallen Giant Sequoia in Maripose Grove. It is estimated that the tree fell more than 300 years ago, but the natural resistance of Giant Sequoias to rot has preserved the trunk to the present time. -

This was likely part of the Mount Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railway, established in 1896 as a scenic tourist railway between Mill Valley and the east peak of Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County.
