Developed in 1861 by Dr. Richard J. Gatling, the weapon was commonly used during the late nineteenth century before being superseded by newer, more modern guns.
Contributor: Audrey Fullerton-Samora of Sacramento, great niece of William and Grace McCarthy, donated the William M. McCarthy Photograph Collection to the California State Archives in 1996.
