American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of California

African American History Week

In accordance with the three themes outlined by the federal commission, Bicentennial Commission of California met the goal of commemorating the American Revolution by promoting, assisting and sponsoring statewide and local community activities and celebrations. In the years leading up to the actual bicentennial, the commission reviewed 457 different projects proposed by different communities and historical organizations. Ultimately, 262 of these projects were selected to be officially supported by the commission in various ways. About forty projects received financial support from the commission, including a project proposed by the Los Angeles branch of the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History (known as the Our Authors Study Club). This organization received a grant of $2,500 to expand their annual Black History Week celebration for 1976 into a longer Black History Month.
