American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of California

California Bicentennial Quarterly

The commission’s other publication, the California Bicentennial Quarterly, was also published at no expense by a local newspaper (the Sacramento Bee). Running from 1973 to 1976, the Bicentennial Quarterly offered updates about different programs and activities like the Dispatch. The February 1976 issue included a photograph of students at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo painting a fire hydrant red, white and blue. Thousands of fire hydrants across the nation were painted in a variety of patterns in the lead up to the bicentennial. The designs ranged from stars and stripes to paintjobs intended to make them look like little Revolutionary War soldiers (often in defiance of local regulations).
