Another project endorsed by the commission was Miss Bicentennial USA, a beauty pageant proposed by the Norwalk Chamber of Commerce (the City of Norwalk had sponsored beauty pageants annually from the late 1950s until the mid-1980s). According to their proposal, each contestant was to give a two-minute talk about “the heritage of her particular geographic area in keeping with the Bicentennial theme.”
