American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of California

Powder Puff Derby

The 29th All-Women Transcontinental Air Race, known as the Powder Puff Derby, was another activity endorsed by the commission. More than two hundred female pilots from thirty-nine states and four countries participated in what was the world’s largest and longest speed race for light aircraft. The race began in Sacramento, California on July 9, 1976, and ended on July 12 in Wilmington, Delaware. There were nine stops along the race where the pilots could refuel and/or sleep overnight.
