American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of California

Leisure Revolution

Leisure Revolution, America ’76 is a lighthearted twelve-month wall calendar endorsed by the commission. The project was a collaboration of the California Parks and Recreation Society, Inc. and the New Games Foundation. The foundation, established by Pat Farrington, was dedicated to the idea of creating friendly, non-competitive games for people to play. Supported by Stewart Brand (co-founder of the Whole Earth Catalog), George Leonard (a past president of the Esalen Institute) and Nolan Bushnell (co-founder of Atari, Inc.), the foundation sought to popularize new games via its calendar and other publications. The calendar included facts about games popular in eighteenth century America along with rules for newly created games, including new frisbee (“based on the principles of maximum performance and impeccable morality”) and infinity volleyball (“the object of this game of cooperation is to keep the ball on the volley indefinitely”).
