American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of California

Our Authors Study Club

The Our Authors Study Club was organized in 1945. In 1948 they began an annual Black History Week celebration held each February in Los Angeles. City-wide events were held including, among other things, speeches held at auditoriums, churches and schools. According to their 1974 program, whose theme was “Helping America Understand,” some of their bicentennial activities included oratorical contests, musical selections, poetry readings, a presentation of black authors, an awards ceremony, a youth rally and the coronation of a “Mr. and Miss African-American History Week King and Queen.”
