The events of Bloody Sunday compelled California State Assemblyman John Burton to introduce House Resolutions 236 and 261. These resolutions urged federal authorities “to immediately dispatch federal marshals to the State of Alabama to protect the Negro citizens of that state and other civil rights demonstrators in their peaceful attempts to secure the right to vote.” On March 21 a third march was attempted. Freed of the judge’s restraining order and protected by Alabama Nation Guardsmen recently federalized by President Johnson, the marchers succeeded in reaching Montgomery on March 25. In his speech at the Alabama State Capitol, Dr. King stated, “our whole campaign in Alabama has been centered around the right to vote…it is normalcy all over Alabama that prevents the Negro from becoming a registered voter…we will not allow Alabama to return to normalcy."
